<span style="font-size: large;">I knitted a long toddler sweater. She can use it as a dress if she wants. </span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;"> I knitted the front, back, and arms separately. I finished off the neck & cuff with a crochet shell stitch. </span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;"> We had thunderstorms today. Then the clouds stuck around and we didn't get to see much of the eclipse. The sky was dark enough that some of the street lights came on, but that might be due to the clouds and not the eclipse. If you look closely, you can see the moon on the far right creating a bit of a crescent. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>

<span style="font-size: large;">This image shows more of the clouds. That was all I got to see of the eclipse between the storm and cloud cover. Better luck next time on April 8, 2024 according to <a href="http://www.cnn.com/2017/08/21/us/next-total-solar-eclipse-2024/index.html" target="_blank">CNN</a> . </span></div>

<div style="margin: 0px 0px 11px;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: x-large;">This can be made in a 9 X 13 cake pan. I like to bake cakes
in canning jars (never can baker products) for convenience.</span></div>

<br />
<div style="margin: 0px 0px 11px;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: x-large;">Ingredients:</span></div>
<span style="font-family: Calibri;"><div style="margin: 0px 0px 11px;">
</div>
<div style="line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;">1 box of yellow cake mix</span></div>
<div style="margin: 0px 0px 11px;">
<span style="margin: 0px;"><span style="font-size: x-large;"> </span></span><span style="font-size: x-large;">Eggs & Oil per
directions for mixing cake</span></div>
<div style="margin: 0px 0px 11px;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;">1 can of crushed pineapple</span></div>
<div style="margin: 0px 0px 11px;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;">Juice of 3 lemons</span></div>
<div style="margin: 0px 0px 11px;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;">1 large box of instant banana pudding</span></div>
<div style="margin: 0px 0px 11px;">
<span style="margin: 0px;"><span style="font-size: x-large;"> </span></span><span style="font-size: x-large;">Milk per directions</span></div>
<div style="margin: 0px 0px 11px;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;">2 drained cans of mandarin oranges</span></div>
<div style="margin: 0px 0px 11px;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;">1 tub of Cool Whip</span></div>
<div style="margin: 0px 0px 11px;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;">*Optional: 1 cup of shredded coconut</span></div>
</span>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0px 0px 11px;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: x-large;">Instructions:</span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0px 0px 11px;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: x-large;">Prepare cake as directed on box. Add crushed pineapple and mix
until thoroughly combined. Bake until inserted toothpick comes out dry. </span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0px 0px 11px;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: x-large;">While warm, poke holes in cake with handle of wooden spoon.
Poor on lemon juice. Allow to cool. </span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0px 0px 11px;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: x-large;">Mix banana pudding and before it sets, poor it over the cake
allowing it to flow into the holes. Arrange mandarin oranges on top. Spread
Cool Whip over the top of oranges and cake. Sprinkle shredded coconut over Cool
Whip. </span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0px 0px 11px;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: x-large;">Serve. Needs refrigeration. </span></div>
<div style="margin: 0px 0px 11px;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: x-large;">The photo shows a plastic cup with the poke cake. I filled the jars too full and had to scoop some of the cake out. I added the ingredients in the plastic cups to finish making them.</span><span style="font-family: Calibri;"> </span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">This is my new basket liner for my sewing supplies. My previous one wore out. It can be seen here: </span><a href="https://ponderingcat.blogspot.com/2012/10/basket-liner-with-pockets.html" target="_blank"><span style="font-size: large;">Basket Liner with Pockets</span></a><span style="font-size: large;"> </span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">My previous liner had flat pockets and I decided that I wanted the new pockets to have more space and I added an inch to each pocket. To protect my pockets from sharp scissors, stylus, pens, or pencils, I use empty prescription bottles to prevent damage to the fabric. </span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">I made our niece a covered photo album. She isn't into flowers and lace, so I made this with few decorations. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0Lcok4IGSVPLwd4WPcI3b-4rUWngd3NJh3muxVtuSwLQuyAkp5oxLvW7U0N7zFzlr8xTLFItDMewcFRaLhoGl5at5k530N_GAgSkdX_0NmVgyQy5YySWRPaNgiix1JyosX_bf9K_EYZWq/s1600/IMG_5623.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-size: large;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0Lcok4IGSVPLwd4WPcI3b-4rUWngd3NJh3muxVtuSwLQuyAkp5oxLvW7U0N7zFzlr8xTLFItDMewcFRaLhoGl5at5k530N_GAgSkdX_0NmVgyQy5YySWRPaNgiix1JyosX_bf9K_EYZWq/s640/IMG_5623.JPG" width="640" /></span></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">I sewed little belt loops on the cover to insert a gold cord. I hot glued the cord in a few places to help it stay secure. This still looks plain. I used metallic fabric paint to put her name on the front. Her first name is painted above the cord and her last name is painted below the cord. I didn't want to give out her name so I didn't include that photo on here.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">I sewed pockets in the back to hold memory cards. It looks like nine pockets, but it is only six. The middle strip is a fold over cover to help keep the memory cards from falling out. </span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">Brown the ground beef and chopped onion. In large bowl, combine all ingredients for the filling. (Do not add the egg wash mixture.) Mix thoroughly. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Position egg roll wrap on point (points facing up, down, and to the sides). Place 2 or 3 TBS of filling in the center of the wrap. Coat all edges with the egg wash. Fold bottom point up and over the filling. Then fold sides in and press edges to seal. If using 2 or 3 TBS, fold top point over and seal edges. Should look like an envelope as in the photo above. If using 1 TBS, roll the wrap up and press the edges to seal. Should be a narrow roll. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Fry until golden brown. Place on cooling racks or on paper towels. Serve immediately or freeze in wax paper & aluminum foil/freezer bags. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">* 2 or 3 packages if you use 1 TBS of filling instead of 2 or 3 as I do. </span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">This is my mozaic quilt so far. I'm in the process of sewing each row and column. </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggQn4WPb-ZumIjBG-EsLm9_g8dhgFL4hQDKxH2XITWDtqUn2DGQVLdcga_JX2kZW02RkNGmTYIzarCb8tbl3yPmMPcJtSOrs6vX-hzupEiyzyJMAy9AK9LVC4nBdH8t88WB_O30t4-d5Ia/s1600/IMG_5538.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-size: large;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggQn4WPb-ZumIjBG-EsLm9_g8dhgFL4hQDKxH2XITWDtqUn2DGQVLdcga_JX2kZW02RkNGmTYIzarCb8tbl3yPmMPcJtSOrs6vX-hzupEiyzyJMAy9AK9LVC4nBdH8t88WB_O30t4-d5Ia/s640/IMG_5538.JPG" width="640" /></span></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">This is how I made my pattern. I printed a black and white photo onto lined graph paper. Then I made a cheat sheet of my fabric in black and white as well. Then I matched the fabric shades to the photo shade. The part that I wasn't happy about was the chin area. There appears to be too much light coloring. In the future, I'll have to watch for such a problem to avoid it. I'll doctor it up a bit with slightly darker shades to create more dimension in the mozaic. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-size: large;">When I matched the fabric to the photo, I wrote down the letter or number that corresponded with the square on the photo. I wrote letters and numbers on the organizer. I kept the fabric squares in a bead/jewelry organizer. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Here are some of my favorite sewing hacks and tips. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhv6P_KlTR9tLfMF684EYe7P5hboXZyYo2aID5ourCSAvLtuRoRYehBRuo7wxwcILwooRz6_sTwd9d8RWJZB_B9zcIn20DQpCnofjmrhfTs1xj050oLy2PztsfVOzNY9NzxmxhlUEeZ_XEX/s1600/IMG_5470.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-size: large;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhv6P_KlTR9tLfMF684EYe7P5hboXZyYo2aID5ourCSAvLtuRoRYehBRuo7wxwcILwooRz6_sTwd9d8RWJZB_B9zcIn20DQpCnofjmrhfTs1xj050oLy2PztsfVOzNY9NzxmxhlUEeZ_XEX/s640/IMG_5470.JPG" width="480" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"> This is the spare spool holder on my machine. I place a large cap on the bottom and then one of the smaller ones near the top. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZfNWeJ19MDQ6f7TBSe2itCwRHZhyZIthk-vATmSaYDW7ibubGqalfzfRvR5mlDGUbgzeLJn4CJzsy6plVIVxaPG-oW5nEOhsfZsK6ax5K2HuoOxBgFBDIaasyNDCh50qkcCEDRb2kpAJM/s1600/IMG_5471.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-size: large;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZfNWeJ19MDQ6f7TBSe2itCwRHZhyZIthk-vATmSaYDW7ibubGqalfzfRvR5mlDGUbgzeLJn4CJzsy6plVIVxaPG-oW5nEOhsfZsK6ax5K2HuoOxBgFBDIaasyNDCh50qkcCEDRb2kpAJM/s640/IMG_5471.JPG" width="480" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"> Then I can use it for a spool that is too large for the regular horizontal spool holder. The bottom cap is where the spool rests. The smaller cap prevents the spool from wobbling. </span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">Sometimes, I forget to remove a pin and then hit it with my needle. If I pin my projects parallel to the foot, then I don't need to worry about removing them because the pins don't get near the needle and I never hit the pins. </span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;"> I carved pumpkins again this year. I used a Drummel tool with the carving bits to do my pumpkins. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3aqOX2e4OW-2gZ0RYKPdecFic5ZX6IKKD6lhpnTxFPbw_Csqec5gRVh3jMNzegWQ-ay-GO99rq8Be7IeZ5rbXol5g66wiAgWkCx7jxEJg9uF8gStb3dzPhbxgnp3-gpBjkdMPVQw9yrXa/s1600/IMG_5503.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-size: large;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3aqOX2e4OW-2gZ0RYKPdecFic5ZX6IKKD6lhpnTxFPbw_Csqec5gRVh3jMNzegWQ-ay-GO99rq8Be7IeZ5rbXol5g66wiAgWkCx7jxEJg9uF8gStb3dzPhbxgnp3-gpBjkdMPVQw9yrXa/s640/IMG_5503.JPG" width="640" /></span></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"> This one is supposed to be a dog. I traced a photo of one of our dogs, but I had trouble. The tracings either looked like a teddy bear or a pig. I tried several times and then decided this would have to do. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDPfHpH3viVMgqeoN43eWoaeSj7MFvUn5S0-Gdv5APSmsURr5YK0rHrA-Ge7KFS7CfeTZBZUe86lmGIKMatsIFt_ZguPkEusi5zt6n62NnhNS3t_fh9yPurHIWUqgfHM1TSEGoXswJO3wE/s1600/IMG_5500.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-size: large;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDPfHpH3viVMgqeoN43eWoaeSj7MFvUn5S0-Gdv5APSmsURr5YK0rHrA-Ge7KFS7CfeTZBZUe86lmGIKMatsIFt_ZguPkEusi5zt6n62NnhNS3t_fh9yPurHIWUqgfHM1TSEGoXswJO3wE/s640/IMG_5500.JPG" width="640" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"> I found this pattern on Pinterest. After I finished carving it, I dropped the pumpkin and the mouth area fell off. I had to fix it with toothpicks. You can see one of the toothpicks if you look closely. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"> I used a photo of one of our cats to make this template. This is my favorite pumpkin this year. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"> This is the photo that I traced of our cat, Mystique. Not all her tabby coat markings are on the traced paper, but this gave me a good starting point. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"> This is the cat template. I used an Exacto knife and cut out the carving areas. Sewing pins tacked the paper onto the pumpkin and I marked the lines </span><span style="font-size: large;">with a red Sharpie fine point marker. Notice that not all my lines meet. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;"> Last year, my hands were sore trying to scrape out the pumpkins so that the Drummel tool could cut deep enough for the light to show through. This year, I ordered this from Amazon. It was much easier and a lot quicker to scrape down the pumpkins. </span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;"> This is a fleece blanket for my niece's birthday. She wanted zombies. I used a tutorial from the internet making scalloped edges, faux braids. When I took a close up image of the braid, the details got lost in the colors. </span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">This is my butterfly block. It is applique. The head and body are trapunto. I hand stitched the head and body onto the green butterfly fabric. I used a simple chain stitch to connect the antenna tips to the head. I used the sewing machine with a zig-zag stitch to sew on the wings. I need a total of 3 butterfly blocks and I think I'm going to use a different stitch for each block. I haven't decided if I'm going to use white thread and give the butterfly a smiling face. <span style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana;"> </span></span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYW34ZpqVhnSyZRcodk18lvKuMicuREF6HC2Xq256MWIH0Uc95m0P3anLKd6gS5AfxDZs_G9B_2XwPBbVC_CiA-u-7-NqfWT0zR-H0lCNlgV4FxdurZ8Q6Kk7dsAOan23Ynay0VdFrD-6E/s1600/IMG_5168.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-size: large;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYW34ZpqVhnSyZRcodk18lvKuMicuREF6HC2Xq256MWIH0Uc95m0P3anLKd6gS5AfxDZs_G9B_2XwPBbVC_CiA-u-7-NqfWT0zR-H0lCNlgV4FxdurZ8Q6Kk7dsAOan23Ynay0VdFrD-6E/s640/IMG_5168.JPG" width="640" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">You can see the handle of the cutting board on the left. The cutting board is the best that I have found so far to prevent heat from getting to the desk. It is also thick enough that steam doesn't damage the desk. This is small enough to be portable and works well for my quilt blocks and other smaller projects. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>

<span style="font-size: large;">These are raw eggs and <b>not</b> for hiding. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGv0lqO2ycCPoH4yr01kWEZbCcP2F_SrPYVgznHlvxcyK0s0LjT1SdrByqlzuGM6ngkwIDkdhey3HtQeXX_cFpXw1wa5jfo978S2plQwJl1sgrIcfp5wm7YPHcy6QJeNz0d4Q6dj7lkFvo/s1600/IMG_5267.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-size: large;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGv0lqO2ycCPoH4yr01kWEZbCcP2F_SrPYVgznHlvxcyK0s0LjT1SdrByqlzuGM6ngkwIDkdhey3HtQeXX_cFpXw1wa5jfo978S2plQwJl1sgrIcfp5wm7YPHcy6QJeNz0d4Q6dj7lkFvo/s640/IMG_5267.JPG" width="640" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"> From left to right: green, red, blue, and purple. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">I put these back in the fridge to use for cooking. </span><span style="font-size: large;">I used cold raw brown eggs because that was what I had. Even though the eggs were brown, I liked the results. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Items needed:</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">-Eggs </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">-Frosting dye/gel dye</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">-Vinegar </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">-Container for dyeing (I used pint size canning jars.)</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">-Water </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">For each jar/container, add one cup of water or enough to cover the eggs completely. (I used cold out of the faucet) Mix enough frosting dye into the water to get the color you want. (I made mine darker so it wouldn't take as much time.) Add 1 Tbl of vinegar per cup of water in the container. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Gently place egg(s) in the container(s) and check every 5 minutes until you get the desired color. Gently remove eggs and place on paper towel over newspapers to dry for a couple of minutes. Return colored eggs to the refrigerator. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Now you have pretty eggs to use as you wish. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">The green and red eggs took 10 minutes to reach the desired colors. The blue egg took 15 minutes. The purple egg took the longest at 20 minutes. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">For food safety, do not keep the eggs out of the refrigerator long enough to come to room temperature. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Why would someone want to dye eggs and not hide them? Because we have no little ones in the home. Older kids (and adults) like the fun of colored eggs, but do not want to hunt for them. I plan to give raw dyed eggs to some friends and family for Easter so they can make breakfast omelets or anything else they would like. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">*CAUTION! Leaving the eggs in vinegar too long will soften the shells. Okay for hard boiled eggs, but now raw. </span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Ingredients:</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Yellow box cake, prepare as directed.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">2 cans apple pie filling</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Caramel ice cream sauce or syrup. Sauce is thicker</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">1 - 16 oz tub whipped topping.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">*optional: 1 cup nuts, such a pecan or walnut. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Prepare yellow cake as per box directions. While still hot, poke holes in the top with a wooden spoon. Some people like to poke all the way to the bottom of the pan. I like to just break a hole in the top to a depth of 1/2 inch to 1 inch. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Pour half a jar of caramel sauce over the cake and use a spatula or spoon to move the sauce toward the poked holes. The heat of the cake will encourage the sauce to penetrate the cake. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">While the cake is still warm, spread the apple pie filling over the top of the cake. I needed 2 cans to make a nice even coverage. </span><span style="font-size: large;">Allow the cake to cool for 20 to 30 minutes before moving it to the refrigerator to cool completely. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">After chilled, spread the whipped topping over the cake and use the rest of the caramel sauce to drizzle over the whipped topping. If using nuts, add at this time. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Alternatives that I have used for this recipe:</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Cherry pie filling with chocolate syrup. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Raspberry pie filling with butterscotch.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Update: These are snug. I wish I would have made them bigger. The tapering of the diamond makes the pocket smaller than anticipated. If you make this shape, make them bigger than I made mine. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjszW2ub55EBAsCIZ4Yoddg0e1zyUqoMwxDwa5QD2I2NnRbdkU7WXC4p8z7pulGkAXFFHBDMQbCBGqF79qf_z9ithvp25EMQkTAJur-N8bK8oNfuf4uLJXN9_vuucXP0-nwDmajWMqFW6nI/s1600/Front+%2526+back0003.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjszW2ub55EBAsCIZ4Yoddg0e1zyUqoMwxDwa5QD2I2NnRbdkU7WXC4p8z7pulGkAXFFHBDMQbCBGqF79qf_z9ithvp25EMQkTAJur-N8bK8oNfuf4uLJXN9_vuucXP0-nwDmajWMqFW6nI/s640/Front+%2526+back0003.jpg" width="480" /></a></span></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">Here are my ornaments that can be used as microwave finger mitts. The left one is a front view. The right one is the back view. The size of these are 9in X 4in, not including the loop. You can make these oven mitts any size, including large enough for a regular oven. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjePmmj7UHsvPQyKPAqE8OBPo6gJGtTHy4v-3VxdOMEV0ZW-xqVfOD_mn_xO5A0UUggN_T3nn049svUA44rrmi3nz9fQ_Pa7c6mvOp5UpollQIWemg_AxDnh8Z2GGbG2yLHgqL_P6hMKdbQ/s1600/Microwave+oven+mitt+%2526+Christmas+ornament0001.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="492" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjePmmj7UHsvPQyKPAqE8OBPo6gJGtTHy4v-3VxdOMEV0ZW-xqVfOD_mn_xO5A0UUggN_T3nn049svUA44rrmi3nz9fQ_Pa7c6mvOp5UpollQIWemg_AxDnh8Z2GGbG2yLHgqL_P6hMKdbQ/s640/Microwave+oven+mitt+%2526+Christmas+ornament0001.jpg" width="640" /></a></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">I started with a paper piecing pattern from a larger project. That is why the numbers are all mixed up. These were leftovers that I copied to make several of the microwave oven mitts. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijJGJEJiJxQMd3CE8SoutOu9LPRQKNMVz_trJj-fVHgLwHbwZZlzaGJFLQu-dg8hLji8DNKxLYqMeIEJ0HX7PRKQZUs-qzk4QHmt_BIigo0sSU0o8VYRw-brhlCckKVUstoJrJKJJz8avj/s1600/foundation+pattern+%2526+pieces0003.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="550" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijJGJEJiJxQMd3CE8SoutOu9LPRQKNMVz_trJj-fVHgLwHbwZZlzaGJFLQu-dg8hLji8DNKxLYqMeIEJ0HX7PRKQZUs-qzk4QHmt_BIigo0sSU0o8VYRw-brhlCckKVUstoJrJKJJz8avj/s640/foundation+pattern+%2526+pieces0003.jpg" width="640" /></a></span></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">I cut out my pieces when doing paper piecing so I don't waste a lot of fabric. I do make my pieces large enough that the seam allowance is slightly more than a quarter inch so that I don't have to worry about getting it exactly centered. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">I used leftover fabric one of my last years projects. You can also use a bigger, whole pieces for the front, and skip the piecing step. The fabric can be the design. You can make these any shape, circles, squares, or any abstract shape you find appealing. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiojUChT4HCZLSv7g-NOjraMLCXATnzIXQCvIcjqmLEezYJMZ9kp-4j9EQKJFMPbvjOMB74YhKyMkHV_u_brpOPjDfnMYr3FQOBXigVaUHz8OrsiT9ymGC8uw2lFhDy8fbbcLE7d_PsdPrd/s1600/pieced+front+%2526+back.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiojUChT4HCZLSv7g-NOjraMLCXATnzIXQCvIcjqmLEezYJMZ9kp-4j9EQKJFMPbvjOMB74YhKyMkHV_u_brpOPjDfnMYr3FQOBXigVaUHz8OrsiT9ymGC8uw2lFhDy8fbbcLE7d_PsdPrd/s640/pieced+front+%2526+back.jpg" width="420" /></a></span></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">The top is an image of the back. The bottom is an image of the front. I rip away the paper before layering. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfWnonVTICgYYntknvnBg6FM7sJY2utlmpmyGwCzul8OdJnQ8jevSDxoQ7jJe0Rw8WbTqql2sel_22f0cLLhi6r1KdpogJ7EBV_FTE3bp1BcoMEJfKBL_KTS0H4VWZylvTXDST93-Okqk-/s1600/IMG_5036.JPG" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfWnonVTICgYYntknvnBg6FM7sJY2utlmpmyGwCzul8OdJnQ8jevSDxoQ7jJe0Rw8WbTqql2sel_22f0cLLhi6r1KdpogJ7EBV_FTE3bp1BcoMEJfKBL_KTS0H4VWZylvTXDST93-Okqk-/s640/IMG_5036.JPG" width="640" /></a></span></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">Here are the pieces ready for assembly. The top row is the front of the pot holder. The middle row goes on the back to cover the insulation layers. The bottom row creates the pockets for fingers. The bias strip covers the raw edges. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">With the pocket pieces, I cute a full size triangle and then folded it in half for more heft. </span><span style="font-size: large;">I did not include a photo of the Insul-Bright and the cotton batting. Cut one of each to use as insulation in the mitts. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">The order of my layers are: 1) Top piece, right side facing down. 2) Insul-Bright layer. 3) Cotton batting layer. 3) The back piece, right side facing up. 4) The pockets. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Pin to hold layers in place. I use glue basting, but I use a towel to put over the pieces when ironing to set the glue. I have had the Insul-Bright melt onto the iron and create a mess. Pieces can peek out a tiny bit. The towel prevents any visible parts from melting. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">I don't worry about the stiffness of the glue because I wash all my projects before gifting those to others or before using them myself. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHvlCESt_ZqevTxVDBj39SuN5JyrNAdoFjsqtHdRXhEJ61cqXhwZ1dUbXvkSJCG_UXXVtDyLQJIWSL2lMj2ro7fi5XFluXYtbhuQzIUhVL_MPWjyU4rl8TQkMV2aYBt-arzpZgu82jnMwS/s1600/IMG_5038.JPG" imageanchor="1"><span style="font-size: large;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHvlCESt_ZqevTxVDBj39SuN5JyrNAdoFjsqtHdRXhEJ61cqXhwZ1dUbXvkSJCG_UXXVtDyLQJIWSL2lMj2ro7fi5XFluXYtbhuQzIUhVL_MPWjyU4rl8TQkMV2aYBt-arzpZgu82jnMwS/s640/IMG_5038.JPG" width="640" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">Here is an image of the back. Notice I left a 1 1/2 inch space between the two pockets to allow for insertion of fingers and more mobility. If you do not create a space, it is harder to get fingers into the mitt and it can feel awkward to use. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">I put bias trim on the top of the pockets to give it more heft. Then I used the bias to cover all the raw edges. If you notice the bias strip only has one side pressed over. That is because I sew the bias with the raw edge matching the oven mitt's raw edge. Then I fold it over to cover the raw edges and hand sew the folded edge to the front side using a ladder stitch. You can machine sew both sides if you wish to. I have trouble making each sewing line look parallel to the other or to sew directly over the initial thread line. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">I use the binding to form a loop at the top to place on the Christmas Tree or to hang in the kitchen. To create the loop, I start sewing the bias strip at the top of the mitt, leaving plenty of extra fabric, about two or three inches, and finish at the top. Then I sew the two ends together, fold the sides over to hide the raw edges, and sew into place.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>

<span style="font-size: large;">This is the finished oven mitt. I am using these as stocking stuffers and fun little gifts. I had been worried that these would be too large to use as ornaments, but I have seen some rather large ornaments on trees. As stated previously, people can use these as ornaments or hang in their kitchen, or both. </span><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzGvvtOtJCxn4Px6kBK9p9bsw7xKzdwbhVDXw2pFZfgpb9ekDc4UnamZ-S9TtMtTBffdopXkZx1UVrQ0U2ao1uJubnLPh-IJdBxkvs94YsGXqBroghVqpNjexfLBuoJyuXN0CsYWO5qt4X/s1600/IMG_4973.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-size: large;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzGvvtOtJCxn4Px6kBK9p9bsw7xKzdwbhVDXw2pFZfgpb9ekDc4UnamZ-S9TtMtTBffdopXkZx1UVrQ0U2ao1uJubnLPh-IJdBxkvs94YsGXqBroghVqpNjexfLBuoJyuXN0CsYWO5qt4X/s640/IMG_4973.JPG" width="640" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">There are pros and cons to paper piecing. Some of the pros are precise seams and stable fabric that doesn't distort. I have been resistant to doing a lot of paper piecing because of one major con: fabric waste. I didn't like using big chunks of fabric to cover a section only to trim so much of it off. </span><br />
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioCfrbALUbmJ_dfl3l0dqflCi1g0DVI-qRPC3mqeaGYDhzIER7V7uhIpe8tMz-e2u26i3Q0PsYHpwZ9HNU9rDmVitaGW2TfxdehO1JO0fDi9XjC2yq7ssNeOLRbSycZAP3RU2ux12BV_vH/s1600/IMG_4975.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-size: large;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioCfrbALUbmJ_dfl3l0dqflCi1g0DVI-qRPC3mqeaGYDhzIER7V7uhIpe8tMz-e2u26i3Q0PsYHpwZ9HNU9rDmVitaGW2TfxdehO1JO0fDi9XjC2yq7ssNeOLRbSycZAP3RU2ux12BV_vH/s640/IMG_4975.JPG" width="640" /></span></a></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;">Then I found a great hint on a show/article/email list. I really cannot remember where I got the idea to cut the pieces to the size needed so there is less waste.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;">From my EQ7 program, I print off the pattern for foundation piecing and instructions for rotary cutting. When I cut my fabric, though, I give myself a little bigger than a quarter inch just to make sure I have plenty of fabric for the seam allowance. I trim any extra after I sew the seam. I don't mind cutting off a sliver of fabric if it prevents a need for ripping my seam and trying it a second time...or third...or more. </span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhu_zPefOVlkRYi19m8klhh50Prz8VZRVGdDVgZz4bSutOvgvRMosnf30xjruAMy9Hz1Bu1VaICD8lyHGC8ahrMqFkgIMrGVOXgJf2ZNmlvhaBB9WnZNB2ZuV5r-Oty5AG5RhMOApmZftdF/s1600/ruler+hints.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="602" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhu_zPefOVlkRYi19m8klhh50Prz8VZRVGdDVgZz4bSutOvgvRMosnf30xjruAMy9Hz1Bu1VaICD8lyHGC8ahrMqFkgIMrGVOXgJf2ZNmlvhaBB9WnZNB2ZuV5r-Oty5AG5RhMOApmZftdF/s640/ruler+hints.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;">I create little cheaters to make my cutting easier. I use Post-it Notes to mark my cutting lines. I like to place them on the bottom of the ruler so they don't block my view. If you use a stack of 2 or more post its, it becomes a guide that fits snugly against the fabric. </span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;">I put a cut out of the shape of my piece on the top of the ruler to guide my cuts and reduce mistakes from brain fog. That way, I don't need a special shaped ruler in various sizes for each and every project. </span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhyTS4duDTSGuBN0J3s8XVvwgQ8CRViI65nMw14E-bCT4jjJtQpK6NoMSUxhK6bi8vQKsYmNooXpj0UMDbM4_gqOAXAeAF7G5BO0oAnN8ehDOfkvhoWWBqeHY-oHMqzBsIF_ADDOMfSBvvj/s1600/IMG_4977.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-size: large;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhyTS4duDTSGuBN0J3s8XVvwgQ8CRViI65nMw14E-bCT4jjJtQpK6NoMSUxhK6bi8vQKsYmNooXpj0UMDbM4_gqOAXAeAF7G5BO0oAnN8ehDOfkvhoWWBqeHY-oHMqzBsIF_ADDOMfSBvvj/s640/IMG_4977.JPG" width="640" /></span></a></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;">With paper piecing, the image is backwards, which doesn't matter when the design is symmetrical and uses the same colors in the same areas. For example, in the above image, the triangles nearest the center square (D3 & D5 and two others not in the photo) use the same color. </span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;">Sometimes, I print out one original pattern from my program, then I write hints on the patters such as the color of fabric or value of fabric I want at a particular spot. Then use our printer to make copies of the marked pattern. </span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVIU4E1__LDTUiijHNkaBLXYrwqwLJcKvM2gdpvQNh16-lt5_ZxhIBOTn1wnyga61xL1I8VIA_C2J4UuMp-imNNwF-qBFFBZgw4y9YDmgN_wv9Fj3lk0qRi9NZ-wuTOmV3PfD8IIdjwb_l/s1600/IMG_4991.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-size: large;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVIU4E1__LDTUiijHNkaBLXYrwqwLJcKvM2gdpvQNh16-lt5_ZxhIBOTn1wnyga61xL1I8VIA_C2J4UuMp-imNNwF-qBFFBZgw4y9YDmgN_wv9Fj3lk0qRi9NZ-wuTOmV3PfD8IIdjwb_l/s640/IMG_4991.JPG" width="640" /></span></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Usually, for my projects, I use plastic zip top bags to keep my pieces organized. I cut out both bottom corners to prevent moisture build up. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjURsA9i14jjC8jDzWmRclkvfZjKxwdzlWGWdzRAcXonKqfo_NhhwnMWbNjOcmGMf6SZTdlzxzbA0Er_45eYNqNmX9kAp9FACeJEST31-yKKPb655eHZCJw0ZxrCke3ppfMgCA6XkIEoWLJ/s1600/IMG_4993.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-size: large;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjURsA9i14jjC8jDzWmRclkvfZjKxwdzlWGWdzRAcXonKqfo_NhhwnMWbNjOcmGMf6SZTdlzxzbA0Er_45eYNqNmX9kAp9FACeJEST31-yKKPb655eHZCJw0ZxrCke3ppfMgCA6XkIEoWLJ/s640/IMG_4993.JPG" width="640" /></span></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">I label the bag with a permanent marker placing the name of the quilt and the foundation piece number where I can readily see them. Then I can grab the bags I need for a particular section. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">This is great if your cat comes along to test gravity by knocking your pieces off your work station. You don't have to pick up the individual pieces... You do have a cat that supervises your work, right? </span></div>
